Duffield 58

Designed for efficiency, comfort and quiet running in the west coast style, the new Duffield 58 takes couple power cruising to a new level of excellence. Built in California by Duffield Yachts she was inspired by the family cruising trawler of Marshall “Duffy” Duffield, owner of the Duffy Electric Boat Company, who brought his ideas to Zurn Yacht Design.

"I wanted a traditional-looking boat that was proportionally correct and would still perform well while using much less fuel," Duffield said. "Doug’s designs 'look right' to me and he emphasizes using modern, advanced composite materials for fast comfortable cruising and fuel savings."

The goal for silent running and best fuel efficiency brought primary electric propulsion to the fore, but given the current options, the design moved toward using a single diesel with the Seatorque Control Boss Enclosed Shaft System. With the soft-mounted engine located aft of the main sitting and sleeping accommodations sound and vibration in the main saloon is at luxury car levels. Efficiency comes from light weight, a narrow long hull form, and superior hull geometry.

Another design element for the Zurn team to consider was simplicity. Duffy has run boats all his life and knows that working on boats is not nearly as much fun. With the single engine you halve the maintenance time and spare parts issues and are more likely to keep both elements at top level, translating to excellent reliability. With far less weight to haul around fuel consumption is dramatically reduced as well.

Stability in motion and at rest were other key functional design elements the Zurn team addressed to high satisfaction. Each Duffield 58 is equipped with a SeaKeeper stability system to keep rolling to a minimum at slow speeds and at rest and Humphree Interceptors ACTIVE ride control for planing speed stability. Whether running through a nasty cross chop or moored in a rolly anchorage, the Duffield 58 provides the ultimate in motion comfort.

The interior centers around the open-plan galley and sitting area in the main saloon with 360-degree views. The centerline helm with more than enough room for instrumentation is incorporated into the forward portion of this space giving the helmsperson unsurpassed site lines. Moving aft leads to a comfortable and sorted aft cockpit while the sleeping accommodations are forward. In the bow, the master stateroom’s island queen berth has easy access from both sides while the roomy en-suite head incorporates a separate shower. To port is a second cabin with queen-sized berth and en-suite head while to starboard is a flexible space that could be used for storage, a crew cabin, or a wonderful kids' cabin.

The Duffield 58 is simplicity at its best while creating an exceptional environment for those on passage. With easy access for maintaining systems, high-end construction quality throughout, and efficiency born of lightweight, creative design and careful planning, the passages will be long and comfortable.
